About
Hockey was first played in Burringbar in the 1920's.
The sport was played at school with sticks cut from trees or lantana and a tennis ball.
In the 1920's Burringbar was renowned for it's successful football and cricket teams and it wasn't until the arrival of the Masterson's that hockey evolved.
The first men's team was formed in 1932 while the women's team formed in 1934.
Unfortunatley in 1939 hockey was no more, due to war being declared.
The next game of hockey to be played in Burringbar was in 1947 when both men's and women's teams were formed. At this stage the Waratah name had not evolved and there were a Burringbar and Mooball men's team as the two villages were still feuding over the shifting of the pub. There were a range of women's teams who had names such as Burringbar Greens, the Wanderers, Mooball and the Sailors.
It was during the 1950's that all local teams came together to form one club, the Waratah Hockey Club.
This decade was a prosperous one for the club with the first junior boys team was formed in 1959. This decade also saw club events evolve in the form of Friday night chook raffles and banquets.
The 1960's brought about more junior players and saw junior girls teams being established.
The club grew in stength and spirit and by the 1980's were extremely competitive.This decade saw our A-grade men's team win 101 consecutive games from 1983 to 1988.
Leading into the turn of the centuary saw the club face many emerging challeneges with other sports being establish in the area.
Waratah Hockey Club continues it's tradition today and is renowned as one of the most successful clubs within in the Gold Coast, Tweed and Northern Rivers regions. Over the years the club has produced many representitive players who have competed at state and national levels. No doubt the club will continue to stride forward into the 21st century and continue the success that has been paved over the last 75 years.
